ATG Western Pacific Assess Bonhomme Richard’s 3M System

EAST CHINA SEA- Afloat Training Group (ATG) Western Pacific embarked the forward-deployed amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) to examine the ship’s Maintenance, Material, and Management (3M) system for an upcoming 3M Certification in May.

The training group evaluated 14 work center’s ability to perform routine maintenance on equipment by conducting various inspections throughout the ship.

“Our main objective is to train and lead the ship to a successful 3M Certification” said Chief Boatswain’s Mate Curtis Foster, an ATG instructor.

The crew spent the last six months training for the inspection. Training included spot checks, equipment validations and Advanced Equipment Repair (AER). The ship assembled its own 3M training team to ensure all work centers maintain a high standard of readiness and rectify discrepancies.

“Currently, we are focusing on going through all the work centers to ensure there is uniformity,” said Senior Chief Electrician’s Mate Sidney Coverson, a 3M team member. “If everyone is on the same page it will be easier to raise the standards and improve the 3M system.”

The inspection was the second of three before the 3M Certification.

“It’s all about keeping Bonhomme Richard combat ready,” said Capt. Joey Tynch, Executive Officer. “We need to execute the basics flawlessly and this will ensure proper maintenance of our shipboard equipment.”

The next ATG assessment is scheduled to take place in February.

The Bonhomme Richard Amphibious Ready Group, currently on deployment in the U. S. 7th Fleet area of operations, will take part in amphibious integration training (AIT), certification exercise (CERTEX), and participate in the annual multi-national combined joint training exercise Cobra Gold.
